The Basic Eight by Daniel Handler is a book I read recently that I couldn't believe I hadn't read earlier. It will take you on a mental trip that you don't know your on until it completely absorbs you. If you want to be deeply involved in a riveting story do not read further. Go and get the book or rent it from the library but it is always best to know nothing at all before beginning.
The blurb of this book could not be better, it is as follows " Flannery Culp wants you to know the whole story of her spectacularly awful senior year. Tyrants, perverts, tragic crushes, gossip, cruel jokes, and the hallucinatory effects of absinthe -- Flannery and the seven other friends in the Basic Eight have suffered through it all. But now, on tabloid television, they're calling Flannery a murderer, which is a total lie. It's true that high school can be so stressful sometimes. And it's true that sometimes a girl just has to kill someone. But Flannery wants you to know that she's not a murderer at all -- she's a murderess. “
No matter your age or background this book will cease to disappoint. The language is vivid and enticing and the story line and characters even more addictive. Each character with a clear personality and each friendship linked differently. The dynamic between the characters instills hope in friendship and visualizes the lengths people will go for someone else.
Time out says " Delicious entertainment and unsettling statement of the irrationality of adolescence" about The Basic Eight.
The perspective jumps between Flannery, the main character's journal entries, and news reports about her. Because of this format you trust Flannery, and despise the news casters for the impeding accusations complied about Flan.
The final message of the book will make you gruntled despite the depressing conclusion for Flan. Regardless of the characters lonely situation, with no parents present, the book makes you feel okay with being alone.
